Original surgery changes the fate of patients

In the field of intestinal cancer diagnosis and treatment, Wang Lei has always been a “unpopular” scientist. He is particularly concerned about the radioactive damage caused to patients by radiotherapy, an area where he is not valued and difficult to achieve results. He has been doing it for more than 10 years.

In the medical field, the treatment of patients with middle and advanced rectal cancer generally uses synchronous radiotherapy and chemotherapy before surgery and surgical resection. However, while radiotherapy kills the tumor, it can also cause excessive damage to the nearby organs, causing radioactive intestinal inflammation, which makes the patient suffer from postoperative pain and is very painful.

Wang Lei said that as a clinician, he has a “strong sense of crisis.” He is accustomed to carefully planning before the operation, timely summary after the operation, and does his best to ensure that patients can maintain more physiological functions and reduce complications.

Positive mentality faces the “king of cancer”

In March 2018, the hospital’s employee physical examination report showed that Wang Lei’s tumor marker CEA was abnormally increased, and further examinations were carried out.The results were astonishing: pancreatic cancer in the advanced stage, and cancer cells have spread to the liver.

Wang Lei’s student and attending physician of colorectal and anal surgery, Ma Tenghui, clearly remembered that on the day of the physical examination, Wang Lei was still performing surgery on the patient. After the operation, he felt “very tired and his physical strength was not as good as before”, “No one expected the result to be so bad.”

Pancreatic cancer is called the “king of cancer” for its high mortality, deep hiding and rapid spreading characteristics. When he returned home that day, Wang Lei held his wife’s hand and looked at the ceiling, feeling a little difficult to accept this fact.

But Wang Lei quickly adjusted his mentality. He decided to “try” once, actively participate in the design of his surgical plan, and adopt a more “radical” surgical plan to remove the tumor more thoroughly.

On April 1, 2018, after more than 10 hours of surgery, Wang Lei’s upper abdominal cavity became nearly half empty. The operation went smoothly, but it also meant the beginning of a difficult life: his body’s temperature control ability dropped significantly; he lost the ability to eat independently, and needed nutritional needles to maintain his life… The originally tall and strong body became weakened.

The postoperative chemotherapy almost caused Wang Lei’s hair to fall off. However, two months after the operation, he took the podium of the ASCO conference. Before giving the report, he was injected with a nutritional bag and lay on the bed for 10 hours to store his energy.

He did not stop his scientific research and work either. During the year, outpatient clinics, academic conferences, and lectures have not stopped; while taking out some drip, he participated in Wednesday’s discussions; as long as his body allows, he will still have key operations… “I may not be able to extend the length of my life, but I can kill the thickness of my life.” Wang Lei said that within his ability, he also wanted to continue to contribute more to medicine and the country.

Devoting to his career made him forget his illness

Wang Lei’s father is a general surgeon. With the original intention of curing diseases and saving lives, he followed his father’s footsteps and also applied to the Department of Clinical Medicine at Zhengzhou University. Although he was transferred to the oral medicine major, he never gave up on his dream of being a surgeon. In 1995, Wang Lei went south from his hometown of Henan to Guangzhou and studied general surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University. In 1996, he was admitted to the then Sun Yat-sen Medical University and became the first president of the Sixth Institute of Zhongshan Komiks, a student of Wang Jianping, former executive vice president of Sun Yat-sen University, stayed at school to work in the Department of Gastroenterology, Zhongshan First Hospital after graduation.

After returning from studying in the United States, in 2007, Wang Lei and more than 30 colleagues stationed in a three- and four-story simple building in Tianhe District, starting a business from scratch, becoming one of the “developing cattle” of the founding of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.

In just over ten years since its establishment, the Sixth Hospital of Zhongshan has developed rapidly. In 2016, the hospital was rated as a Grade A hospital. The gastrointestinal and anal surgery led by Wang Jianping, Lanping, Wang Lei and others have gradually ranked among the forefront of the field of colorectal and anal diseases diagnosis and treatment in China.
